Über Chain Key Technology

Chain Key Technology (CKT) is a core innovation of the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP), designed by DFINITY. It's a highly sophisticated cryptography innovation that allows for the network's continuous operation, advanced security, and fast finality.

CKT organizes the nodes within the Internet Computer network into subsets referred to as subnet blockchains. Each subnet blockchain is assigned a chain key pair, which is crucial for the creation of blocks and the verification of transactions.

One of the key features of CKT is its ability to allow for frequent key rotations - approximately every few minutes. This frequent rotation ensures the security of the subnet by making it very difficult for malicious actors to compromise the chain key pair.

Moreover, CKT allows for fast finality. Finality refers to the guarantee that once a transaction has been confirmed, it can't be reversed. With CKT, transactions are finalized quickly, often in 1-2 seconds, thus enhancing the network's speed and efficiency.
