Crypto Fear & Greed Index

The Fear & Greed Index is calculated using multiple market indicators including market momentum (comparing current prices and volumes to recent averages), volatility (measuring unusual price swings compared to the 30-day and 90-day averages), volume (comparing current trading volume to historical averages), and market breadth (the proportion of assets rising versus falling). Each component is weighted and combined into a single score from 0 to 100.

Extreme Fear (score 0–24) indicates that investors are highly anxious about the market. This often coincides with sharp price declines, panic selling, and widespread negative sentiment. Historically, periods of extreme fear have sometimes presented buying opportunities for long-term investors, as prices may be temporarily depressed below their fair value. However, extreme fear can also precede further declines, so caution is always warranted.

Extreme Greed (score 75–100) signals that investors are highly optimistic and may be taking on excessive risk. This often occurs during rapid price rallies when FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) drives prices to potentially unsustainable levels. Extreme greed can be a warning sign that the market is overheated and may be due for a correction. Experienced investors often use extreme greed readings as a signal to take profits or reduce exposure.

The Fear & Greed Index is often used as a contrarian indicator. The famous investing principle 'be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful' applies here. When the index shows extreme fear, it may signal a potential buying opportunity. When it shows extreme greed, it might be time to exercise caution. However, the index should be used alongside other analysis tools and not as a standalone trading signal. Combine it with technical analysis, fundamental research, and your own risk management strategy.
