    The Blockchain Trilemma

The blockchain trilemma, coined by Vitalik Buterin, states that it is extremely difficult for a blockchain to simultaneously achieve all three properties: decentralization, security, and scalability. Most blockchains optimize for two at the expense of the third.

  2. 02

    The Three Properties

    • Decentralization: No single entity controls the network. More nodes and wider distribution mean greater decentralization.
    • Security: The network is resistant to attacks, manipulation, and double-spending. Typically requires economic incentives and/or computational work.
    • Scalability: The ability to handle a large number of transactions per second (TPS) without degradation.
  3. 03

    How Blockchains Make Tradeoffs

    • Bitcoin: Prioritizes decentralization and security at the cost of scalability (~7 TPS)
    • Solana: Prioritizes scalability and security but requires higher hardware requirements, reducing decentralization
    • BNB Chain: Higher TPS with fewer validators - scalability over decentralization
  4. 04

    Attempted Solutions

    • Sharding: Splitting the blockchain into parallel shards
    • Layer 2: Moving transactions off the main chain
    • Modular Blockchains: Separating execution, consensus, data availability, and settlement into specialized layers (e.g., Celestia for DA)
