Stacks

Stacks was co-founded by Muneeb Ali and Ryan Shea, which are both seasoned entrepreneurs with a strong and experienced background in technology and blockchain. The original concept was called 'Blockstack' and was discussed all the way back in 2013, however, Blockstack was launched a few years later in 2017, and renamed Stacks in 2020, in 2021 the mainnet was launched. The project has gone through a long list of funding rounds, ranging from Angel, Pre-Sale, Seed, Series A, Strategic, Private, and an ICO which has secured the project $95.000.000 U.S. Dollars in funding.

Stacks uses a unique consensus mechanism called Proof of Transfer (PoX), which is similar to the Proof of Burn algorithm, however, instead of burning the excess cryptocurrency, the excess cryptocurrency (Bitcoin in this case) is sent to the STX hodlers who have locked up their Stacks STX coins, this means they earn Bitcoin (BTC) for their staking participation. The PoX consensus mechanism links Stacks to Bitcoin's blockchain and by doing so, makes it possible for transactions/interactions with smart contracts on Stacks blockchain to be confirmed on the Bitcoin blockchain. Stacks bundle transactions/blocks on its chain and broadcast them to the Bitcoin network, Stacks have a block time of 6-15 seconds. Stacks uses a unique programming language called Clarity which is designed for smart contract development.

Stacks offers several notable features:

• Staking: STX hodlers can earn Bitcoin by locking their STX tokens and by doing so helps the stability of the network.
• Smart Contracts: Developers have the ability to create smart contracts that use Bitcoin's security.
• Interoperability: Stacks integrates with Bitcoin allowing applications to interact with the Bitcoin network through applications deployed on Stacks.
• Governance: STX hodlers can vote with their coins and help shape the direction of Stacks.
• Community Driven: The project has a strong community that is encouraged to participate by developing new applications and suggesting features and improvements.

Despite its promising features, Stacks faces several challenges:

• Dependency: Stacks is dependent on Bitcoin if Bitcoin implements its own programming language for handling smart contracts, there may not be a need for Stacks anymore.
• Clarity Programming Language: A less-known programming language can be the reason developers don't choose to build on Stacks.
• Competition: Stacks competes with other more efficient smart contract platforms in terms of TPS, like Solana, and Cardano.
• Adoption: Convincing developers and businesses to adopt a new platform can be difficult, especially with established players in the space.
• Scalability: While the network uses Bitcoin's blockchain which may be a concern regarding scalability.
• Complexity: The integration with Bitcoin and the use of PoX may present complexities for less experienced developers.
