Cardano

Cardano (ADA) was founded in 2015 by Charles Hoskinson, one of the co-founders of Ethereum. He initiated the project to build a more scalable, secure, and sustainable blockchain that could address the limitations faced by earlier networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum.

After two years of research-driven development by IOHK (Input Output Hong Kong), Cardano’s mainnet was officially launched in September 2017.

Cardano’s native cryptocurrency, ADA, is named after Ada Lovelace, a 19th-century mathematician who is widely regarded as the world’s first computer programmer.

Since its launch, Cardano has gone through several major development phases, known as eras, each focusing on key aspects such as foundation, decentralization, smart contracts, scalability, and governance. These carefully planned upgrades reflect the project’s commitment to scientific rigor and peer-reviewed development.

Cardano has developed a unique consensus mechanism which is called Ouroboros, Ouroboros is a delegated-proof-of-stake consensus algorithm, that allows users to pick a validator that then represents them and creates new blocks, and validates transactions. This consensus mechanism is by design very energy-efficient, at the current stage cardano can handle 50 transactions per second, however, with the much anticipated Hydra (sharding) upgrade, it is claimed to be able to handle upwards of 1 million transactions per second when 1.000 staking nodes are running (1000 transactions per node).

Cardano offers several notable features:

• Scalability: The blockchain's architecture has the potential for vertical scaling of transactions without compromising security.
• Interoperability: Cardano is working towards interoperability with the Ethereum EVM, making it possible to bridge tokens with EVM-compatible blockchains.
• Sustainability: The delegated proof-of-stake model promotes a sustainable approach to network security and energy consumption.
• Smart Contracts: Developers has the ability to create complex dApps and smart contracts using the platform's native programming language, Plutus.

Despite its promising features, Cardano faces several challenges:

• Adoption: Gaining widespread adoption and competing with other established platforms like Ethereum and Solana remains a significant hurdle.
• Complexity: The academic approach to development can lead to slower progress and updates compared to other cryptocurrencies that tend to move faster.
• Market Volatility: Like many cryptocurrencies, ADA's price can be highly volatile, influenced by market sentiment and investor speculation.
• Plutus/Haskell: Haskell is a less-known programming language that can be a hurdle for development adoption.
