Filecoin

Filecoin was founded by Juan Benet, who is also the co-founder of the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), a peer-to-peer hypermedia protocol. The Filecoin cryptocurrency was developed to incentivize the storage and sharing of data across a decentralized network, which can improve data accessibility and security. The project made headlines with its ICO in August 2017, which raised an impressive $153 million at an initial token price of approximately $1.9, becoming one of the largest crowdfunding events in cryptocurrency history. However, the network officially launched in October 2020 after extensive development and testing.

Filecoin uses a unique consensus mechanism called Proof-of-Replication along with Proof-of-Spacetime and Proof-of-Replication. These mechanisms verify that data is being stored and retrieved accurately and efficiently by miners who provide storage capacity. The network can handle around 100-200 transactions per second under optimal conditions, with a block time of approximately every 30 seconds.
