Helium

Helium was founded back in July 2013 by Amir Haleem, Chris Bruce, Sean Carey, and Shawn Fanning. Helium was developed to address the need for a decentralized wireless network capable of supporting the billions of IoT devices expected to come online. Helium launched what the project itself calls "The People's Network" back in 2019 which was the beginning of its decentralized wireless infrastructure. The project has had several funding rounds including: Seed round for $2.8 Million, a Series A round for $16 Million, a Series B round at $20 Million, a Series C round at $15 Million, an undisclosed round at $111 Million, and finally a Series D at $200 Million, raising an impressive $364 Million. Helium was originally its own blockchain network and served as a layer 1 coin on its own native chain, however, in May 2023, the community voted to migrate the Helium Network from its own layer 1 blockchain to the Solana network.

Helium uses a special type of consensus mechanism known as "Proof-of-Coverage (PoC)", which rewards users for providing network coverage via hardware called 'Helium hotspots'. The network is focused on data transactions rather than financial transactions, its system processes data for IoT devices efficiently through its decentralized network of Helium Hotspots. Helium's block time is approximately 60 seconds. The network makes it possible for users to earn HNT tokens by setting up hotspot devices that broadcast and validate wireless coverage, functioning as an internet gateways for IoT devices.

Helium offers several notable features:

Despite its innovative approach, Helium faces several challenges:

• Scale and Coverage: Helium requires a large amount of community participation to achieve widespread network coverage.
• Complexity: Operating and managing hotspots can be complex for average users.
• Regulation: Helium may face regulatory attention related to cryptocurrency and telecommunications laws.
• Market Adoption: The project must gain traction among IoT device manufacturers and service providers to be successful.
• Competition: Competes with established IoT connectivity solutions and other decentralized networks.
