Klaytn

Klaytn was developed and deployed back in 2019, by the team behind Ground X a subsidiary of the South Korean tech company Kakao, led by its founder Jaesun Han who has a Ph.D in EECS, is a serial entrepreneur and blockchain enthusiast. Klaytn has had several funding rounds including a Private round in Dec 2018, at $0.03 for $20 Million, and a Private round in Apr 2019, at $0.047 for $90 Million, raising more than $110 Million. In August 2024 Klaytn officially started to merge over to a new chain called Kaia.

Klaytn uses a consensus mechanism known as Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT), which makes it possible for the blockchain to achieve a relatively high throughput of 4,000 transactions per second with a block time of just 1 second. Klaytn is built around an architecture that requires three different types of nodes: Consensus Nodes (CN) which are responsible for producing new blocks and participation in the consensus process, Proxy Nodes (PN) which acts as a buffer layer to reduce the load on Consensus Nodes, and lastly the Endpoint Nodes (EN) which handles API requests from users or dApps, such as querying the blockchain or submitting transactions.

Klaytn offers several notable features:

• Governance: Klaytn has a governance structure that allows stakeholders to participate in important network decisions.

Despite its advanced features, Klaytn faces several challenges:

• Competition: Klaytn competes with other established blockchain platforms, such as Ethereum and Binance Smart Chain, which may limit its adoption.
• Centralization: The reliance on a small number of Consensus Nodes leads to questions about decentralization.
• Regulation: Klaytn has to deal with global and local South Korean regulations which may affect its operations and growth.
• Market Volatility: Like all cryptocurrencies, KLAY experiences price fluctuations influenced by market sentiment and external factors.
