Siacoin

Siacoin was founded by David Vorick and Luke Champine, who were computer science students at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. They co-founded Nebulous Inc. to develop Sia with the vision of decentralizing cloud storage. Siacoin's development began in 2013, and it was officially launched in June 2015. One of the significant milestones for Siacoin was its hard fork in 2018 to deter ASIC mining centralization. The project has held a small seed round for $3 million in 2020.

Siacoin uses a proof-of-work consensus mechanism similar to Bitcoin. It allows users to store and retrieve data from a decentralized platform. On its network, Sia can manage approximately 10 transactions per second with an average block time of about 10 minutes. An essential aspect of Siacoin is that it uses smart contracts to facilitate agreements between storage providers and users, ensuring that data is encrypted, distributed, and redundant throughout the network. Additionally, the use of Merkle trees within these contracts ensures data consistency and integrity during storage processes.
