TerraClassicUSD, along with the broader Terra ecosystem, was developed by Do Kwon and Daniel Shin, co-founders of Terraform Labs. Do Kwon has a background in computer science from Stanford University, while Daniel Shin has extensive experience in e-commerce and consumer finance. A major event in TerraClassicUSD's history was the collapse and de-pegging incident in May 2022, which also led to a total crash of its sister token, LUNA.

TerraClassicUSD operates on the Terra blockchain using a delegated Proof-of-Stake (dPoS) consensus mechanism for validating transactions and ensuring network security. The value of USTC is maintained through an algorithmic stabilization mechanism that uses the Terra protocol’s LUNA token, automatically adjusting supply in response to market demand. TerraClassicUSD transactions on the blockchain can achieve settlement times of around 6 seconds per block.

Despite its features, TerraClassicUSD faces several challenges:
