Arweave

Arweave was co-founded by Sam Williams and William Jones, both of whom have notable backgrounds in computer science with PhD's. The project was developed to address some of the major challenges of established cloud storage providers where data loss, migration, privacy, and high costs are a major concern. Arweave also launched something called the "permaweb" which is a permanent internet where sites cannot be taken down. Arweave has had several funding rounds ranging from Seed at $0.180, Private at $0.560, Pre-Seed, an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) in 2018 at $0.132, another Seed round in 2019, and another undisclosed funding round in 2020, the Arweave project has raised an impressive $20.000.000 U.S. Dollars.

Arweave uses a unique consensus mechanism called "Proof of Access" which incentivizes data-storage providers to store data for longer periods by periodically require each provider to prove they still have the data to continue receiving rewards, this makes the consensus algorithm more effective because each participant don't need to store the entire blockchain and all of its blocks, just one existing block called a recall block, making it possible for long-term decentralized data preservation on-chain. Arweave's blockchain is designed to hold 1000 transactions per block and has a block time that averages around 2-3 minutes, this allows roughly 500 transactions per minute allowing transactions to be confirmed relatively fast. Arweave uses a data structure called "blockweave" which strengthens data availability and enhances the efficiency of its storage protocol by linking blocks in a non-linear format.

Arweave offers several notable features:

• Hosting: Users can contribute their unused hardware space to help store data on the Arweave network. In return, they earn AR tokens when data is stored.
• Data Permanence: When you upload data to the Arweave blockchain the data is stored permanently and forever.
• Scalability: The network can handle a relatively large number of data transactions making it a competitive option for large-scale applications that wants decentralization.
• Low Cost: Once data is uploaded to the blockchain it only requires a single upfront payment, there re no recurring payments for hosting or bandwidth usage when reading/retrieving the data making it highly cost-effective over time.
• Decentralized Storage: Users can securely store and share data without relying on and trusting centralized platforms that are capable of deleting and viewing your data easily.

Despite its promising features, Arweave faces several challenges:

• Adoption: Gaining a larger market share in the cloud storage business can be extremely challenging.
• Market Competition: Arweave faces strong competition from other decentralized storage projects like Filecoin and Storj but also from established providers such as Amazon AWS.
• Regulation: Arweave is subject to regulatory attention, especially as it is a data storage provider, which could impact its operations.
• Technical Complexity: The underlying technologies may present a learning curve for those unfamiliar with blockchain and decentralized systems.
