BitShares

BitShares was co-founded and launched in 2014 by blockchain pioneer Dan(iel) Larimer. Initially released under the name "ProtoShares" and later rebranded to BitShares. BitShares had a significant role in the early development of decentralized finance (DeFi) infrastructure which influenced future platforms like Steem, EOS, and others.

BitShares is one of the first blockchains to introduce the Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) consensus model where hodlers vote for a limited number of trusted delegates, known as "witnesses," who are responsible for producing blocks. BitShares supports advanced features like smartcoins (e.g., bitUSD), decentralized identity, and high-speed trading on its built-in decentralized exchange, which can process thousands of transactions per second.
