dYdX

dYdX launched in 2017 with an airdrop distributed to early users. dYdX is founded by Antonio Juliano, a former Coinbase and Uber engineer. The project began as a decentralized margin trading platform and has evolved into one of the most prominent decentralized derivatives exchanges in the DeFi space. In 2023, dYdX began migrating from StarkWare’s layer 2 zk-rollup solution on Ethereum to a custom-built layer 1 chain in the Cosmos ecosystem.

dYdX uses different technical layers depending on its version. Earlier versions were used as Ethereum layer 2 solution using StarkEx (a zk-rollup). More recently, dYdX launched its own app-specific blockchain (dYdX Chain) using the Cosmos SDK and Tendermint consensus. This move gives the protocol full control over its infrastructure, offering higher throughput, customizable validator incentives, and enhanced decentralization. The DYDX token is central to governance and staking.
