Steem

Steem was founded back in March 2016 by Dan/Daniel Larimer, and Ned Scott, both of whom have deep knowledge in software development and blockchain technology, Daniel who founded Bitshares and was a key developer behind the EOS blockchain and Ned who is the founder of the social media platform Steemit. Steem has been launched without any funding rounds like an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) or Initial Exchange Offering (IEO).

Steem uses a consensus mechanism known as Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) where users lock-up their coins and delegate them to something called 'witnesses', 'witnesses' are the nodes who are responsible for producing new blocks and validating transactions. Steem's blockchain has 3 different types of native tokens: STEEM (rewarded to users for engaging with content), Steem Power (rewarded to users for participating in staking and can be used in voting), and Steem Dollars (an algorithmic-backed stablecoin pegged at $1), all 3 combined creates an ecosystem that incentivizes user participation and content creation. The Steem blockchain has proven to be able to handle 10.000 transactions per second and has been able to reach an impressive 180.000 transactions per second on a testnet with optimized conditions. Steem's block time averages around 3 seconds which makes it possible for near-instant transaction finality.

Steem offers several notable features:

Despite its innovative features, Steem faces several challenges:

• Competition: Steem must compete with other social media platforms and blockchain projects that offer similar services.
• Centralization Concerns: Critics argue that the DPoS system may lead to concentration of power among a small group of witnesses.
• Volatility: The value of STEEM can fluctuate significantly, impacting the incentives for users.
• Regulation: As with all cryptocurrencies, Steem is subject to increasing regulatory attention which could affect its use and adoption.
• Community Disputes: Internal disagreements within the community over changes can impact the project's direction and user sentiment.
