The Graph was founded by Yaniv Tal, Brandon Ramirez, and Jannis Pohlmann, who all have backgrounds in engineering. The cryptocurrency was developed to solve the inefficiencies faced when retrieving blockchain data for developers. In 2020, The Graph network launched to enable the creation of subgraphs, a decentralized approach to making blockchain data open and accessible. The project raised funds through an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) in October 2020, raising $12 million at a token price of $0.03.
