Zcash

Zcash was founded by Zooko Wilcox, Nathan Wilcox, and Eli Ben-Sasson. Zooko is an established cryptographer with experience in projects like DigiCash. Eli Ben-Sasson is recognized for his work on zero-knowledge proofs, which are fundamental to Zcash's privacy technology, while Nathan played a key role in the project's development and technical infrastructure. The creation of Zcash was motivated by a desire to enhance privacy in digital transactions and provide an alternative to Bitcoin by offering shielded transactions that hide the sender, receiver, and transaction amount. A notable event in Zcash's history is its mainnet launch on October 28, 2016. The project funded itself through a "Founders Reward," allocating 20% of the initial coins to early stakeholders over the first four years.

Zcash uses a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, similar to Bitcoin, to secure its network. The current block time for Zcash is approximately 75 seconds. One of the key technologies underpinning Zcash's privacy features is zk-SNARKs (Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge), which allows users to conduct transactions without revealing any transaction details. Zcash gives users the flexibility to choose between two types of addresses: T-addresses, which are transparent, and Z-addresses, which offer full privacy.
