Coinbase

Coinbase has not experienced a platform-wide hack or exploit. However, in early 2025, the exchange suffered a targeted data breach through a bribery scheme involving outsourced customer support. This incident exposed sensitive personal data of less than 1% of users, which attackers used in social engineering scams by impersonating Coinbase support. While private keys, login credentials, and wallets remained secure, the breach prompted a $20 million ransom demand—which Coinbase refused—offering instead a $20 million reward for information leading to arrests. The exchange estimates a remediation cost of up to $400 million and has since cut ties with the implicated vendor and strengthened its internal protocols. In addition, Coinbase continues to face regulatory pressure from the SEC, which has charged it with operating as an unregistered national securities exchange. No criminal allegations, such as money laundering or terror financing, have been made. Coinbase maintains robust security practices, including 2FA, biometric verification, and cold storage for the majority of user assets.
